Spring Tries A Second Time
by admin - 16:51 on 25 March 2014
Spring is making a second attempt to begin around The Rural Retreat. Yesterday I saw the first butterfly of the season – a peacock – which almost became the first ex-butterfly when Pandora made several athletic leaps. Today, a bumblebee and a honey bee were spied in quick succession; flowers both domestic and wild have added colour.
That, and a sunny day, left me no excuse for not starting some long-overdue garden work so this afternoon the year's first bonfire was lit and several barrowloads of twigs, branches and assorted debris went up in smoke. Unfortunately there's still lots left to dispose of.
A good percentage of scruffy wilderness will survive – this is a wildlife-friendly garden after all – but tidiness will gradually overtake the rest. Lawnmowers have been out nearby. Ours will follow shortly.
