Leaping After Lizards
by admin - 16:57 on 20 April 2014
Life is tough for lizards in the environs of The Rural Retreat. Willow continues to persecute the blameless reptiles, seizing every one she can to bring indoors and show off her hunting prowess to Matchgirl, me and less agile members of The Pride.
Sometimes they're returned to the wild with tails intact, sometimes not, but none have become ex-lizards – unless a few died of shock after regaining their freedom.
The Grey Streak must have powerful in-built reptile radar. Today she joined me and Pandora on a stroll to the top of the lane and a short way beyond, which is outside her usual territory (as far as we know). Beside the grassy verge she paused, listened, pounced and extracted a lizard from the undergrowth all in the space of a few seconds. The reptile was freed unharmed.
A start was made today on the weeding I swore I'd never do in the Retreat's wildlife garden, but having established a couple of flower beds last year it seems sensible to keep rampaging dandelions and the rest of the gang at bay. Although there's lots more to do, the garden's current state is good enough to be depicted in a snap taken today.
