Hot Off The Press

by admin - 11:16 on 23 April 2014

The Bassman Books office has not seen a lot of activity since publication last year of Rosemarkie People and Places and Moray Firth Dolphins, to general acclaim and the satisfaction of their authors. I've had a few inquiries since then but they all came to nothing – either the proposed project wasn't commercial enough or the would-be author couldn't find enough start-up cash. Times are hard.

However, I've not been resting on my laurels; Bassman Books may be publishing nothing new but my design and layout skills are being made use of by people who are.

Next month, all being well, will see the appearance of the as-yet-untitled silver anniversary anthology from the Black Isle Writers. Editorial conferences have been ruthless and hard bargaining is taking place with potential printers to ensure that the contributors' efforts are available at a price readers can afford.

My role is to produce camera-ready pages and design front and back covers. Simples.

Of more immediate interest is Brothers In Arms, which was published this month by its author, Stuart Edmond of Fortrose, who had delved into the past to learn about his wife's three uncles who all died in the First World War. With my help, his text and photos were turned into a 16-page A5 booklet intended for friends and family but which has already stirred memories in Shetland where the uncles came from. An article on the booklet will appear in the Shetland Times; the museum in Lerwick is also interested.

I could do the same for you. Family history, club handbook, business promotion... anything. Contact me and we'll take it from there.
