Iceland Here We Come

by admin - 23:10 on 19 June 2014

The bags are packed, The Rural Retreat's been cleaned and tidied so our cat-sitters don't think we're total slobs, and outside the grass has been trimmed so there'll be less of a jungle to hack back on our return. Tomorrow (that's Friday) Matchgirl and I rise at a ridiculously early hour after which we'll drive to Glasgow Airport from where we'll fly to Reykjavik, venue of the Midnight Sun Half Marathon on Monday.

I've been spoiled by this year's previous foreign jaunts to sunny Mediterranean hot spots. The forecast for Iceland during our stay varies from site to site but the consensus is a temperature in the mid fifties at best, rainy spells and occasional 30mph winds. Lightweight shirts and sun hats are out; jumpers and waterproofs are in.

This is a bit of a blow after a week of unexpected Scottish sun, for which I paid with a dose of hayfever. Fortunately (for us, anyway) the weather's on the turn so we won't miss much at home during our absence, apart from The Pride, that is. The moggies won't miss us though – not if the greeting Maia gave the sitters is anything to go by. Soo and Tony called in a couple of days early to reintroduce themselves to their old feline friends and met with uncharacteristic affection from our usually caution black cat.

Maybe she thinks she'll get more treats from them. Some cats have one-track minds.
