You don't have to be a rock star to have a rock star ego, as yesterday's gig with The Deeds at Beauly Gala proved. The bassist whose shoes I was filling (because he had a gig with his other band later in the evening) turned up just before the interval and made it plain that there would be big sulks if he didn't get to play the rest of the gig.
I wasn't happy, but I let him have his way – I'd already been paid, anyhow – then returned to The Rural Retreat for a small sulk of my own. The drizzle-spattered crowd had shrunk since the kids went home for tea, and lack of rehearsal showed, so I wasn't as aggrieved as I might have been.
Strong words must have been spoken after the gig because the future of the band is now in doubt, just when I was looking forward to a few more gigs with it. My rock and roll curse has struck again. At least The Strays will gather soon for talks and rehearsals. No gigs on the horizon yet, though.
There's not been much snappery of late either, so here's a picture taken on Matchgirl's phone after we returned from the perilous ascent of Snæfellsjökull. She likes it, so here it is.
And here's a couple of grainy snaps to prove that martens continue to taunt us by visiting in half light and after dark.
