Heat In The Highlands

by admin - 21:59 on 26 July 2014

It's not often nowadays that Matchgirl feels the weather's warm enough for a long-distance jaunt aboard Kawasaki San, but yesterday, after almost a week of high temperatures and blue skies, she took a chance (although, being cautious, she packed a jumper in the topbox, just in case).

She need not have worried. By the time we reached Applecross, via an ice-cream break at Kinlochewe, she'd remembered that sometimes it really can be too hot on the bike, especially when stationary and clothed in leather.

Even Bealach-Na-Ba offered no relief from the relentless heat (and traffic) so it was a pleasure to pull in at the Kishorn Seafood Bar – a place we've never before frequented. I don't know why, because the food there is superb. Look in next time you're passing. You won't be disappointed.

We arrived home with just about enough tread left on the tyres for the journey to RM Motors next week where Kawasaki San will have a new set fitted. I like to get my moneysworth.

Back at The Rural Retreat the sun continued to blaze down. Two-thirds of The Pride has taken it easy during the past few heat-filled days, only Willow being out and about as usual, to the continued detriment of local wildlife.

But all good things come to an end. This afternoon the clouds returned, the temperature fell and so did the rain, much to Matchgirl's relief. Watching Commonwealth Games athletes slog round a course in sauna conditions is one thing; doing her next long training run in them (tomorrow's task) is another.
