Meteorologically Challenged
by admin - 21:55 on 12 August 2014
There've been some wild days at The Rural Retreat as the remains of Hurricane Bertha pass through Scotland. The lawn (which I'd turned into a smooth well-mown loveliness the day before the good weather ended) is now covered in leaves, willow twigs and small branches, plus the toppled remains of our second lilac bush. At least The Nutella Tree survived, its regrowth continuing apace, and no pools of rainwater threatened the sandbag-protected front door.
The downpour does seem to have halted the activity of the resident moles who'd been doing their best to recreate the Himalayas in our garden, so the meteorological mayhem hasn't been all bad.
It may be a while before I have the opportunity to begin the clean-up. Even if the forecast wasn't gloomy for days, which it is, I'm currently in the middle of putting together the next edition of Chatterbox (which promises to be another good read) so time is at a premium.
I plan to deploy the Pentax a couple of times in the next few days in aid of Chatterbox, first at the St Boniface Fair in Fortrose on Thursday, then Cromarty Gala on Saturday. Whether the weather plays along remains to be seen.
The Pride is also unimpressed by conditions that have seen its members stay unwillingly indoors and make use of litter trays. The early autumn may also have contributed to the air of despondency surrounding the normally irrepressible Willow, who's done little but sleep for two days.
Maybe hibernation's not such a bad idea.
