Hangin' At The Station
by admin - 09:58 on 09 November 2014
Twenty years ago, Charlie Watts famously said that life with the Rolling Stones had been five years of playing and twenty-five of hanging around. I know the feeling.
As requested by the management, the members of City Limits gathered at the Station in Alness at 8.45pm on Friday where the charity casino night was in full swing. Almost two hours later, after spending time in a quiet back bar, we were able to hump the gear into the main room, set up and make a five-minute sound check. Playing proper began around 11.30 and ended at 1am (with What's Up, as always bawled along with by the crowd).
At the beginning, the prospects had not appeared good because the crowd was mostly male, which meant there'd be little dancing, and well refreshed, which raised the possibility of rowdiness. But all turned out well. There were enough girls when needed and any rowdiness was good-natured and enthusiastic. All being well we'll be back soon to play for three hours instead of ninety minutes.
This can't happen soon enough. After three gigs in three weekends we now have a blank diary until the end of December (the 21st, at Johnny Foxes, Inverness – be there) and not much after that. Fortunately, venues will begin filling their 2015 calendars this month so we should soon have more gigs in hand. In the meantime, if you're looking for a band, you know who to call.
The gap also means we might at last find time for some rehearsals at which I can polish a few rough edges. There's also talk of several new songs, including Time Of My Life. It would be a stripped-down version, but if we could pull it off it would be a winner. All we have to decide is who'll catch Ashley at the end.
