A Commotion At The Station
by admin - 12:38 on 07 December 2014
City Limits returned to the stage last night after a few weekends' absence, preceded in our rehearsal room by a run-through of some of the set by three-quarters of the band. Drummer Mike was unable to join us until the gig itself, so my audition remains the only occasion on which all four members have assembled except to perform. What a bunch of pros.
The hasty practice was held at the request of Ashley, briefly back home from her tour in Beauty and the Beast (I'll let you guess which role she plays) and concerned that we didn't have enough numbers for a three-hour set. We do, but as it happens that didn't matter...
The omens looked good when the four of us stepped inside The Station at Alness just before nine to find a gang of twenty girls in party dresses tucking into Christmas dinner. This looked dicey for the advertised start time of ten – as they'd to finish eating, the tables be cleared away and our gear brought in and set up – but the management was unconcerned, and as we had guaranteed dancers neither were we.
So we settled into a corner and waited, during which time conversation turned to the new Live Aid single and the discovery that I'm the only band member who was alive when the original came out. Gulp. Then we waited some more and monitored the growing commotion involving the party girls and a group of management representatives over payment of the bill. When the issue was resolved, to no-one's satisfaction, the girls left (some muttering darkly) and we set up. The first song was sung an hour after the supposed curtain-up.
Fortunately, the remaining punters enjoyed the music. Dancing took place, and some audience singalongs. Certain male members of the crowd were so impressed with Ashley's voice that gratuitous drinks were pressed into her hand. Or maybe it was her leather hot pants that impressed them. Whatever, a good time was had by all, including the band. Some rehearsals would be handy, especially if we're to introduce more songs, but we seem to be getting by without them.
Our next gig's on Sunday the 21st when I'll return to Johnny Foxes in Inverness for the first time in more than seven years. How did that happen?
