A Brace Of Foxes
by admin - 14:20 on 18 January 2015
City Limits went into this weekend's two-night stand at Johnny Foxes with low expectations – not only is money tight after Christmas, there was also ice, rain, wind and snow to contend with. Who in their right mind would venture out into that?
So after a cautious journey from the Black Isle on sometimes slippery roads, with snow blowing horizontally past the windscreen, it was no surprise to find that the Friday night crowd was not huge. Undaunted, we set up, carried out our brisk five-minute sound check and launched into Superstition as a change from usual opener I Shot The Sheriff.
Our efforts were rewarded. The crowd grew until an hour from the end when the pub and dance floor were packed with revellers who cared nothing for bad weather and debt. Three new songs had their first performance: Don't Speak, Crazy Crazy Nights and Time Of My Life, and all went down well.
Saturday night began busier and stayed that way – a hen night always helps. We had a bit of a hiccup when Mike broke a skin on his snare and had to replace it with one stolen from the decrepit collection of cast-off musical instruments screwed to the performance area walls as decoration, but we resumed with Titanium which is guaranteed to get the crowd bouncing. It did.
I got home around three so I'd earned the lie-in I enjoyed this morning until eleven. Sunshine on snowy fields should have got me out with the Pentax but lethargy was more attractive; maybe tomorrow if the weather stays decent for another day.
The only bad news is that we don't have another gig on the calendar until the end of March, but who knows what will turn up in the meantime. At least there'll be time to work on even more new songs. Poker Face has been vetoed by Ashley, who doesn't like it, but the wedding we're booked for in August has requested additions to the set including AC/DC, Robert Palmer and Joan Jett. Great stuff.
