Tricky Times For Travellers

by admin - 15:01 on 31 January 2015

It's been quiet again, apart from days when the wind howls around the Black Isle, sometimes aided and abetted by rain or snow, neither of which have been too bad since our almost-flood subsided.

Newhall BridgeThe aftermath of The Mighty Wind can still be heard in the sound of distant chainsaws – much timber has yet to be cut into portable chunks – and the cursing of drivers who forget or never knew that Newhall Bridge is closed following its close encounter with a tree. According to Highland Council it's beyond economic repair so a temporary bridge will be put in place before work begins on a new one, estimated to cost £500,000. We might have to wait some time.

The detour to east and south Black Isle involves many single-track back roads. Some across the peninsula's raised spine are still snowy so travel can be a nuisance, as I discovered yesterday when out and about on Chatterbox business. This took me, among other places, to Rosemarkie to gather snaps of herbalist Cornelia, proprietor of Panacea, who features in a hot news story set to appear in the next edition. The Pentax continues to be underused so it was good to fire it up again.

Some of the results were soft – I still prefer to use the 50mm lens at f1.8 when indoors rather than flash – but enough survived quality control to give me a choice of illustration.
