Cats can be television critics. At least, Willow, The Grey Streak, can.
The Pride's smallest and most athletic member continues to seek out new places to explore and new heights to scale inside The Rural Retreat. A few weeks back, with one mighty bound, she reached the top of our previously unconquered large bookcase, although she had to be helped down. Next time she found her own route of descent, via the back of the sofa, much to the startlement of Maia and Matchgirl.
Bored with that, she turned her attention to the mantelpiece, which up to then had been a cat-free zone. Another mighty leap took her there, where she stepped delicately amongst assorted knick-knacks that include the decorative top of our wedding cake, still intact after almost seven years. It remains so, but for how much longer is a matter of conjecture.
Willow's most recent success was to reach the top of the television, where she strutted back and forth a few times along its narrow ridge line (it's a flat screen), switched it off in the middle of the DVD I was enjoying, then jumped down, her critical role complete. Cats clearly have no time for Miss Marple.
Her next target may be in the kitchen – the wine rack on top of the old bookcase in which much (fortunately cheap) glassware is kept. Several times she's been seen atop the pedal bin, eyeing up the distance. Cats won't be told.
Band Update: City Limits' private do on Sunday saw us entertain a roomful of international curling enthusiasts at the Kingsmills in Inverness. A month's lay-off showed here and there but we were well received, even if Ashley sounded more and more like Bonnie Tyler as the evening progressed. Thursday's planned rehearsal has been called off to give her throat a chance to recover.
