Pump Up The Volume

by admin - 20:35 on 27 July 2015

There's no accounting for music venues. “Turn it down,” is the most frequent request from the management to rock bands entertaining their punters. We've never before been asked to turn up the volume, but that was the demand from the barman at the Balconie Inn when The Strays played there on Saturday night without drummer Matt.

This was unfortunate. Our first set was one of the best we've played with perfect sound balance and barely a note out of place. Being able to hear what you're doing really does make a difference. The crowd loved it.

Greater volume turned the sound to mush (at least where I was seated, on the small Trace Elliot amp I use for Strays gigs) with predictable consequences for the standard of playing. The crowd still loved it; there's no accounting for the public either.

Much praise was heaped on us afterwards, and at least two private gigs may result from our efforts. It's a funny old world.

If you want to hear what you've been missing, here's a video of our recent rehearsal (with Matt) at Ardross Hall.
