Four new songs were introduced into the the City Limits live set last night at Johnny Foxes: three were planned, and had been rehearsed (albeit in the absence of drummer Mike, who made up his part on the night); the fourth was played following overwhelming demand by a gang of guys who bawled out Twist and Shout at every opportunity. No prizes for guessing which was the most well received.
We all knew the song to some degree, although Ashley had to Google the words on her phone, and were able to busk a good enough version for the enthusiasts to sing along with. It turned out that much of the rest of the crowd knew enough of the words to join in too, and did so with exuberance. We played it again as an encore, to an equally noisy reception. Sometimes these things just happen.
So there's a good chance that we'll learn the song properly, polish it up and present it again at a future gig – at which, not doubt, it will be met with indifference. Life on stage is unpredictable.
For the record, our other debut songs also proved popular: Man, I Feel Like A Woman, You Shook Me All Night Long, and, especially, 9-5 (Dolly, not Sheena). City Limits really is the band with something for everyone.
