Three Wee Softies

Cats like to strut around with an attitude that claims they're mean loners who need nothing and no-one (apart from help with the tin-opener). But occasionally they give the game away.

Matchgirl is currently taking care of business in Shetland, leaving me the only human occupant of The Rural Retreat – and one very busy putting together the forthcoming autumn edition of Chatterbox (and trying to ignore the glorious weather outside). Keyboard-battering moggies contribute little to the process so I'm apt to shuffle and grumble when Willow leaps up to find a comfy lap or stroll around the desktop.

A cat can take only so much rejection, and after a while she usually jumps off to find a more congenial spot in which to snooze. This is often the couch behind me, so when I noticed her sprawled on the floor it caught my attention. What was wrong with the regular resting place?

I turned to find out and discovered two other cats already stretched out there. Even in a cottage as small as The Rural Retreat, now and then The Pride feels the need for the security of being where the people are. It's nice to be wanted (even if it's mostly cupboard love).

I'm pleased to report that soon after that, and with no bad words being spoken, all three found harmonious couch space in which to doze while I did my journalistic duty.
