A Cat In The Doghouse

by Russell Turner - 20:56 on 15 November 2015

Matchgirl learned two more of the challenges of cat ownership during the last couple of days. One arose from the recent plummeting temperature that saw snow on the Ben for the first time since spring and the ceremonial first lighting of our open fire.

She was still chilly at bedtime, so a fluffy woollen blanket was fetched out of storage to add some heat to her side of the bed. This aroused much interest amongst moggies, who ignored their own bedspreads and draped themselves across its pristine whiteness until Matchgirl's thoughtless movement disturbed them. In protest, they dragged the blanket off her, slumped on top of it and went to sleep, leaving her to shiver.

The second challenge, presented last night, involved the unfortunate interface of a black cat, a glass of wine and Matchgirl's laptop. The consequence is that Dr Digital will be consulted tomorrow and asked if the computer can be revived; if not, can the contents of its hard drive be saved. Maia is in disgrace. Maybe Matchgirl should invest in PawSense.

Fortunately, I've had no trouble with the Mac. The next Chatterbox is almost complete and our first late-year blackout occurred when my trusty desktop machine wasn't in use – not a problem I'll have to deal with after next week, for I've finally got around to making an investment of my own and ordering the £75 gizmo that keeps it running long enough after a power cut to save work and shut down. Storms, snow and high winds will no longer have me on tenterhooks. That's money well spent.
