Death Of A Laptop
by Russell Turner - 20:37 on 17 November 2015
Yesterday, because Matchgirl was absent on business in Edinbugh, I delivered the sorry, soggy carcass of her laptop to Dr Digital and explained about Maia's alcoholic mishap. The expression on his face was no cause for optimism.
“It will need two weeks to dry out properly,” he stated, so his phone call today was a surprise. “The motherboard is dead,” he told me. The laptop is no more. It has ceased to be. It is an ex laptop. Maia is proving to be an increasingly expensive house guest.
The only crumb of comfort for Matchgirl was that Dr Digital had extracted all the data from her hard disk and copied it to an external drive.
Perhaps there may be another crumb: at the weekend she plans to invest in a replacement laptop, doubtless after much Googling on her iPad to find out exactly what she needs (and wants; the two are not synonymous) and what colours they come in. Surprisingly, the iPad lover, iPod owner and iPhone wannabe, has already dismissed the idea of another Apple product, the MacBook Air. Maybe they're not waterproof enough.
I've been having my own tussle with technology. Yesterday, after a week of silence, I made contact with Dr Rock – Ross-shire's premier amp surgeon – and a short time later delivered him my ailing Trace Elliot. With luck he'll have it fixed before Friday's gig at Foxes, otherwise the hefty Marshall will be called back into service.
I'd stepped inside his excitingly cluttered workshop to discover Strays axe hero Jim there, dropping off a friend's poorly amp. Much gossip took place, plus the unsurprising confirmation that The Strays have also ceased to be, singer Greg having no time for rehearsals or gigs. As drummer and dad-to-be Matt had already wound down, that's that.
So anyone on the lookout for an occasional bassist knows who to call.
