Rod, Rick And Johnny

by Russell Turner - 18:25 on 19 June 2016

A quiet few weeks for City Limits came to an end on Friday evening with the first of two nights at Johnny Foxes. A few technical problems got us off to a shaky start but by the end of the night the room was rocking.

Saturday night also saw a slow start, this time the fault of Rod Stewart whose gig at Caley Stadium had captured much of the Highlands' music-loving public, so we kept it quiet to begin so the sound wouldn't echo too much around the almost empty room.

But the place began to fill as concert-goers left the stadium and flooded the town centre in search of more action (Rod's gig ended around the same time ours started – clearly he was worried about the competition). By the time our mid-gig break was due, Foxes had been heaving for about fifteen minutes so we bravely soldiered on, unwilling to risk losing the atmosphere.

This was a good decision. A great time was had by all, especially when we busked Rod's anthem Sailing. We're shameless. By the time we finished we'd played three straights hours and repeated only two songs, both requests. We even had several left over – that's a proper repertoire.

I got home after 3am, by which time it was beginning to get light. I could have spent three hours in bed then caught the early flight to London so I could witness the debut of Rick Wakeman's updated Arthur at the O2, but sanity had prevailed when I considered the logistics (and finances) a few weeks ago. Shame. At least I have the download to listen to.
