An Overdue Visitor
by Russell Turner - 15:22 on 30 June 2016
This morning found me awake at five, again, which is not a good thing. I can't even blame Matchgirl, who's consorting with the Vikings in Shetland, or cats (not this morning, at least), who were remarkably quiet and well behaved. It was just one of those things.
The silver lining was that when I looked out of the bedroom window I saw this year's first daylight pine marten snuffling around underneath the bird feeder near the gate. By the time I got downstairs, to the Pentax, she (I think) had lolloped through the foliage to The Nutella Tree and climbed it in a couple of bounds. Last night's Nutella was gone but there were enough traces left to keep her interested for a couple of minutes.
I snapped a few snaps and waited for the pose that would compensate for dull light, but it was not to be. The cat-flap clanged and a grey-and-white blur streaked across the lawn. The marten leapt and ran, leaving Pandora smugly in charge of the tree. Fortunately there were three snaps worth keeping.
Pandora must still have been full of herself a couple of hours later when I watched a juvenile crow chased away from beneath the feeder by a would-be assassin who'd lurked in the undergrowth and emerged at speed. It's just as well that she wasn't faster – the crow's mum was watching from a nearby tree, and she looked big enough to seize The Tabby Terror and drop her from a great height.
Pandora the feline cliché takes a break from her exertions.
