Bats And Cats

by Russell Turner - 17:39 on 22 August 2016

One of the mixed blessings of caring for cats is the frequent opportunity for close observation of wildlife, usually found in one of three states: struggling and indignant; limp and resigned; dead and partially consumed.

However, it’s difficult to imagine that members of The Pride, even Willow the Grey Streak, are responsible for the demise of the animal whose corpse I discovered beside the garden gate this morning – a brown long-eared bat. It appeared undamaged, so maybe natural causes were to blame.

They’re tiny, very fine-featured, and protected by law, so I’ll keep one eye open for a roost and the other for predators; The Pride has already shown its contempt for the society's rules by its brutal treatment of shrews, another protected species. Cats don't care.
