The Economics Of Music

A musician, some wags claim, is someone who puts gear worth £5,000 in a £500 car and drives 100 miles for a £50 gig. The figures might not be quite the same but last night’s City Limits appearance at the King Haakon Bar in Kyleakin proved that there’s a lot of truth in the statement.
I left The Rural Retreat at 6pm and returned, after a 160-mile round trip, at 3am. Fortunately, the reception we received made the effort worthwhile, and we even played decently. Calls for an encore were turned down by the management, who were keen to clear the premises, so some of the over-excited crowd continued their evening by leaping into Loch Alsh to cool off. They’re probably regretting it today.
The road home featured close encounters with four deer, three cats and one pine marten, who was lurking by the garden gate when I pulled into our parking area. Who says you don’t see wildlife at night?
We make our Wick debut next Friday, which is even further than Kyleakin, but as accommodation is part of the deal there’ll be no deer-dodging on the way home. The following night we’ve a wedding to play, at Dingwall. It’s good to be busy again.
