A Bold Decision

by Russell Turner - 20:20 on 19 December 2016

We’ve decided to live dangerously. Today, Christmas came out of the shed and decorated the artificial tree that Matchgirl bought and erected in a corner of the sitting room. Lights, baubles and tinsel festoon the tree; mini-trees and sparkly reindeer occupy the mantelpiece; two stockings (currently empty) hang on each end of the curtain pole.

Cats, surprisingly, have taken little notice, although a small amount of play amongst the bauble boxes took place. The two huge catnip toys purchased at the same time as the tree may have helped.

Whether feline disinterest in festive foliage will continue remains to be seen.

More Yuletide preparation was made this morning when I fought my way around Dingwall’s Tesco  – something I’ll be unable to do closer to the big day because City Limits performs in Skye on Friday night and Nairn on Christmas Eve. With luck The Rural Retreat is now stocked with enough food and drink for the next seven days, although if the forecast of dramatic wind and rain is correct we may have to stretch it out a bit further.

Cats, of course, have enough to keep them fed for weeks. The Pride never goes hungry, although Maia would disagree. Some cats can never get enough.
