A Date With Mr Blue Sky
by Russell Turner - 13:58 on 23 December 2016
Matchgirl’s substitute has replied. And not only is Mrs Tweedy (for it is she) excited by the thought of seeing Jeff Lynne’s ELO in Glasgow, so is Mr Tweedy. Despite this, Matchgirl is still unenthused about the gig so just three of us will head south in June. Some people have no musical taste.
After having not been to a gig for years, 2017 promises to be a musical bonanza of 1970s nostalgia for someone with large numbers of Yes, Genesis and ELO LPs (but no record player) in his collection. Donny Osmond and Black Sabbath are also lined up to play at the SECC (not on the same bill) but that might be taking things a bit too far.
The cherry on the top will be the Strictly tour, although Matchgirl is not getting carried away. As she plans to wear a sparkly top rather than a posh frock (much to Cathy’s relief) my DJ would be a tad overstated, so it looks like the usual jeans. Shame.
Closer to home, Storm Barbara has left City Limits in a disarray that was resolved only three hours before our planned time of departure for the windswept Hebrides and the gig tonight on Skye. The result of much debate is that Jenna, fearful of foul weather and motoring disaster, will stay home and City Limits Lite will entertain the festive masses at the Portree Hotel. Sam, anxious about being stuck at the wrong side of a closed bridge tomorrow morning, agreed to take his chances.
Also staying home will be the band van. A Transit and gales don’t mix.
PS: The bass player in the ELO clip is Lee Pomeroy, also bassist for ARW, who we see (Mrs Tweedy and me, that is) in March, and has played with Steve Hackett, who we see in May. A good bass player is hard to find.
