Begging For Bacon
by Russell Turner - 13:39 on 11 January 2017
When Matchgirl’s communing with the Shetland Vikings, and I’m left home alone to care for cats, it’s a natural assumption that I’d take advantage of her absence to resume the carnivorous cuisine I favoured before meeting my meat-free mate.
In fact, I continue to eat the same as when she’s in residence, apart from the occasional chicken curry, which means that soups, Quorn and fish are usually on the menu.
But now and then the craving for something unhealthily meaty takes over, which was why yesterday found bacon sizzling on the hob.
The Pride is always curious about food, but its interest in bacon took me by surprise. I’d barely opened the packet before my ankles were surrounded by a moggy maelstrom, all three of its constituent parts eager to let me know that they’d be willing to take a taste test. As the sizzling increased, so did the squeaking.
Matchgirl will be relieved to know that cats received neither scraps nor a plate to lick, feline welfare as always being foremost in my mind.
