The Bedtime Routine
by Russell Turner - 14:18 on 15 January 2017
Cats, as has been mentioned several times, are creatures of habit, especially when it’s bedtime. (Although, being cats, they reserve the right to change their routine with no notice, then resume it as though nothing had happened.)
Pandora is usually the first upstairs, from where she calls plaintively if a human doesn’t follow quickly enough, followed by Maia. A short scuffle often ensues, usually won by Maia, to establish who gets the better sleeping position. Willow is often happy to sleep downstairs.
But things change when Matchgirl is in Shetland. At night, Maia stays downstairs cocooned in the nest she creates from the blanket left on Matchgirl’s sofa seat and Pandora curls up in the purple throne.
As for Willow, she keeps me company, often worming her way beneath the duvet – and tapping me gently on the chin if she can’t find a gap through which to reach the bed’s warm interior.
Cats know what they want, and how to be comfortable.
