Digital Decisions
by Russell Turner - 21:05 on 13 February 2017
Matchgirl needs a new Kindle, because her old one is playing up, and a new phone, because her HTC’s memory is too small, and a new iPad because the OS upgrades have made it unusable. Life is hard in the digital age.
This, of course, has been the cause of much angst as she Googles and comparison shops her way through a huge number of variables. Kindle Paperwhite or Fire? iPhone 6 or iPhone 7 (because it must be an Apple)? iPad 4, MIni or Air? How much storage? What size processor? Brand new or reconditioned? What’s the catch if this one is so cheap? What (most vital of all) colour?
One decision that has been made is what to do with her cast-off iPad. No, it won’t be passed down to me (not that I have a use for it). Her plan is to load to with feline-friendly apps and leave it in The Pride’s toy box where in predict that Willow will love chasing digital fish, Pandora will ignore it and Maia will hide from it.
As for me, I’ll continue to trust my ancient (2008) MacBook and antediluvian (2000) Mac G4. However, my Stone Age Nokia unsmart phone (2005) will need to be replaced sooner or later because the keypad is almost worn away. Something for £20 from Tesco will suffice.
As for Kindle, I’ll stick to real books. Nothing beats paper.
