All Change In The Kitchen

by Russell Turner - 22:27 on 14 June 2017

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, according to the ancient Chinese sage Lao Tzu. Today the first two steps were taken in transforming the interior of The Rural Retreat into the habitat Matchgirl has always wanted – one that’s bright, uncluttered and, most of all, warm.

The first of today’s visitors was Mr Engineer, who followed in the steps of his colleague, Mr Serviceman, who yesterday spruced up our Seventies-vintage Rayburn. Despite that, the Rayburn’s days are numbered, its role as provider of heat and hot water inside the Retreat to be superseded by a modern oil combi boiler. A by-product of this is that the immersion heater cupboard can be converted into a wardrobe. Matchgirl is beside herself with excitement.

Huge changes are proposed in the kitchen, which will feature new units and appliances – maybe even a dishwasher, another Matchgirl dream. (I thought we already had one, but that’s just me being sexist.) The first took its place today, after Mr Delivery Man stepped into the kitchen to deposit a new fridge and take away its venerable predecessor. No longer will we suffer a fridge that thinks its a freezer.

It’s amazing how much gunge builds up behind white goods.

No timetable has been laid down for further changes, which will also encompass bathroom, living room and bedrooms. We’ll see how it goes. And I get to choose the new cooker.

Another visitor was Mr Autoglass, who replaced Grandson of Seat’s windscreen at no extra charge, then Squirrel James, now resident of Clydebank, turned up during a flying visit north. The Retreat’s not seen such activity for years.

Cats, of course, were not impressed. Much skulking (Pandora and Willow) and glowering (Maia) took place. All will be back to normal tomorrow. For a while, anyway.

PS: Anybody want to buy an old Rayburn?
