Locking Up Willow
by Russell Turner - 15:07 on 19 June 2017
The siskin slaughter continues. I was awakened at 5.15 by downstairs commotion and happy chirrups – the usual indication that Willow has hold of another victim beneath the dining table. By 9.15, and despite heavy rain, she’d added two more siskins to the tally – six in two days – so I ended the persecution by locking the cat-flap, much to The Grey Destroyer’s displeasure.
Lack of opportunity helped calm her down, and after a lunchtime walk it seemed safe to unlock the flap. At the time of writing there’ve been no more deaths (although there has been more lurking) and, being contrary, now the sun’s emerged she’s content to stay indoors.
As for the rest of The Pride, the hungry black lump that is Maia stays inside The Rural Retreat, as usual, apart from her daily accompanied walk. Pandora, the cat of mystery, either sleeps indoors or makes solo forays outdoors (although she did join the communal walk). What she gets up to is unknown, but the corpse of a great tit I found on the lawn yesterday evening suggests that it’s not all innocent fun.
The wrens know not to trust strolling moggies – alarm calls echoed all around the garden during our perambulations, but a few made themselves visible for some snaps.
Also in focus was Willow, who’s found herself a new posing platform.
