The Contrariness of Cats

Cats are supposed to be aloof loners. The evidence doesn’t always point that way.
Three moggies joined me on yesterday’s walk but Willow, who is easily distracted, was soon left behind to pursue her investigations in the undergrowth. A few minutes later an anxious squeal could be heard in the distance, easily translatable as: “What’s happened? Where has everyone gone?” Moments after that a small grey cat trotted around the corner and immediately pretended to be interested in some shrubbery.
Maia’s just the same. Yesterday evening, on a pre-bed visit to the bathroom, I ignored what I thought were cries for more food from the black cat in the kitchen. Finished in the bathroom, I stepped into the bedroom to find her waiting for me on the bed, ready to curl up against me – a position she maintained all night. After six nights sleeping downstairs she’d decided that she needed company.
Pandora is the least clingy of the feline trio. The exception is when she insists on shadowing Maia’s pre-mealtime pacing – always an anxious time for the black cat – and is punched for her effrontery. Yet early this afternoon, while Willow was out persecuting birds, I found her and Maia curled up on the bed, facing each other, in a scene of exceptional contentment and unexpected harmony.
Less in harmony is wildlife and The Grey Destroyer. Her latest tally is a siskin yesterday evening, another this morning, a coal tit and a vole. A field mouse was rescued and released. How can anything so small and innocent-looking be such a monster?
