A Step In The Right Direction
by Russell Turner - 16:41 on 17 October 2017
The pace is picking up. Today was week two and day four (only 14 more to go) of the couch to 5K programme, at the end of which I’ll be able to run 3.1 miles in 30 minutes or less. Allegedly. VMLM wanted me to do 2mins run and 2mins walk x5 but I plumped for the more challenging RW target of 3+3x4.
And I did it! All four running sections were completed, and with no extra walking. The duller conditions may have helped, or the return to my familiar route, or the warm-up stretches taken from one of the vast library of running books assembled over the years by Matchgirl, but the most likely contributor to my athletic progress was the snazzy running shirt and wind-proof top she gifted me. All I need now is to replace my lightweight outdoor trousers with something more runnery and I’ll look like the real thing. Until I set off, anyway.
Thursday’s run will be the same again, but on a different route. In the meantime I’ll bite the bullet and click the mouse to buy more running gear for myself. Matchgirl recommends the sale section of sportsshoes.com (although shoes is the one thing I won’t buy online) and claims she’s never bought anything at full price. Maybe that’s how she can afford so much of it.
