Exposed To The Elements
by Russell Turner - 17:01 on 21 October 2017
Matchgirl can be cruel. Today I dressed in some of my new gear for the last of this week’s run-walks, including shorts – the first time my legs have been exposed to sunlight for several years. “You need some spray tan,” she opined.
Despite that, she braved the glare of my legs to accompany me and offer encouragement and advice during a 5R+3Wx3 session which I completed without incident. The good news is that she approves of my running style, my feet striking the ground in the approved manner, ie not heel first; the bad news is that I’m running too fast, which explains the panting. The difficulty is that I feel if I go slower I might as well walk. Doubtless, time will resolve this issue.
However, she claims that I look like a runner, which is a comfort even if I still feel a fraud, dressed up in a proper runnery outfit, and expect that people will point and laugh.
So that’s two weeks done. At the start, when running non-stop for one minute was a challenge, the thought of five minutes seemed unlikely. But that’s behind me; next week’s sessions feature seven- and eight-minute runs. Wish me luck.
