Nothing To Worry About
by Russell Turner - 20:56 on 01 November 2017
I’m a real runner at last – today I felt my first muscular twinge.
Following the advice of Coach Matchgirl, the pre- and post-run stretches I’ve performed have stopped me from seizing up after sporting effort. Despite that, half an hour after today’s session (four seven-minute runs broken by three three-minute walks) there was distinct soreness in my left hip.
“On a scale of one to ten, with ten the worst pain ever, how does it feel?” Matchgirl enquired. The answer was “Just one,” so there’s nothing to worry about, she said, unless it doesn’t go away. I’ve got to expect some aches and pains along the road to marathon glory.
She introduced me to her foam roller, which smooths out tight muscles – at the cost of greater pain than that it was employed to suppress. I abandoned the masochist’s friend and retrieved the massage stick from The Chamber of Abandoned Running Gear, which proved to be much more effective.
As one of the world’s least sporty people, I’m sticking surprisingly well to the couch to 5k training plan – even adding a few minutes’ extra running to the last few sessions because I felt up to it. (Which may explain the twinge, of course. Slow and steady is the way, plus running more cautiously than I seem able to manage.) I’m even looking forward to the sessions as my endurance slowly increases. The huge rainbow this morning was a bonus.
However, I’m only just into my fourth week of training (less than 25 to The Big Day) and so far the weather’s been kind. Will I still be smiling when the weeks have turned to months? Time will tell.
