Wimping Out Of The Weather
by Russell Turner - 21:43 on 10 November 2017
Bad weather had to catch up with me eventually. Cold wind and lashing rain greeted me this morning when I peered outside to see the conditions for today’s training session – no great surprise as I’d heard both battering the window pane.
Fortunately I’m flexible and wasn’t due to run again until Monday, so today’s exertion will now take place tomorrow. The forecast promises sun, light wind and no rain in the afternoon. We’ll see.
One thing that won’t be going with me is a metronome. This, Matchgirl has patiently explained, regulates steps per minute, not speed. I should pace myself by running at a tempo which leaves my breathing comfortable – something that’s still problematic as my slow run is only marginally faster than my brisk walk. It must be a long legs thing.
There was further marathon news today in my first email newsletter from Virgin Money London Marathon HQ, inviting me (and presumably thousands of others) to set up a charity page before November 30 for a chance to be upgraded to a VIP package. The benefits include starting the run with the celebrities, two finish line grandstand tickets for my chosen fans, and £1,000 towards my charity.
I do have one in mind, but was waiting until I’d completed the couch to 5k to be certain. I’ll reveal the fortunate charity before Matchgirl and I head for the Florence Marathon. One thing’s for certain – whatever the charity, fancy dress won’t be involved.
