Poor Matchgirl
by Russell Turner - 19:14 on 25 November 2017
It had to happen. Matchgirl woke after a restless night with a sore throat. She perked up after the Full Potential runners’ briefing, and an individual one at which coach Ben said there was no reason why she couldn’t run a good time, but by the afternoon her illness had taken a firmer hold.
This is most unfair. She took an injury to the London Marathon, suffered food poisoning before the Malta Half Marathon, and now, when she’s never been running better, she gets my flu. Yes, I feel very guilty, especially as she’s probably been incubating it since before we left home.
As for me, I’m still a little shivery and wobbly but improved enough to join Matchgirl for my first steps down Florentine streets on a short outing to the nearby supermarket. There she bought small bottles of water, just the right size and design to be refilled with proper runner’s water and held in the hand on the way around the course. (One at a time, with me doling out replacements at pre-determined pit-stops.)
Because she’s not giving up. So send her your good vibes for tomorrow and with luck she’ll finish in a time that makes nothing else matter.
