A Day Of Tourism

by Russell Turner - 17:26 on 29 November 2017

Today Matchgirl and I made our first proper sightseeing wander around Florence, where every street is a scooter showroom with two-wheeled vehicles lining every available kerb. This might explain some of the adventurous parking performed by four-wheeled road users: the double whammy of parking on a corner and across a pedestrian crossing is not uncommon.

We did attempt some touristy things yesterday, but a temperature close to zero didn’t combine well with Matchgirl’s on-going illness and drove us back inside for the afternoon. I’m just about recovered now, since you ask.

Duomo 1

Highlight of today’s trip was a look at the Duomo – the iconic cathedral in the middle of the city – which is more impressive than its publicity photos, which usually show it bathed in soft evening light. Even on a grey day it’s worth the effort.

Duomo 2

If you’re an enthusiast of narrow streets, back lanes, shabby wooden shutters and doors, fancy ironwork and statues everywhere you turn, Florence is for you. The beggars, chuggers, spivs and tourist crowds are no worse than anywhere else.

Arno Bridges

Two views of the River Arno, one taken today, the other two days ago, the day after the marathon deluge. Weather changes quickly around here.

Weather changers quickly here too! We have had rain, sleet, snow and a little bit of sun. It has been cold but cats sitting on your lap is like having a furry hot water bottle. 😁

They can have their uses.
