Hunger In The Night
by Russell Turner - 19:29 on 01 April 2018
Cats won’t let you get away with anything. Last night’s City Limits gig on Skye (another triumph, even with the last-minute absence of Jenna) meant a 6pm departure and The Pride going without its supper, usually served at 10pm, because Matchgirl was also absent, on ultra marathon duties. Moggies won’t miss one meal, I reasoned.
I returned to The Rural Retreat at 3.40am, expecting to find a cottage filled with sleeping cats. Instead I found them wide awake and keen for a snack. Whether Grandson of Seat had roused them, or they’d been alert all evening, I’ll never know.
Biscuits were dished up and I was allowed to sleep at 4am – until 7.30am when breakfast was demanded. At least I was allowed another three hours in bed after the ravenous horde had eaten.
Apart from a swift visit to Tesco, the rest of the first day of April – three weeks exactly before the London Marathon – was spent recovering from Friday’s long run and Saturday’s late night. More in need of recovery was Matchgirl, who arrived home from her ultra marathon with horrific tales of mud, rain, mud, wind and mud. And more mud.
But she completed the 50k/31-mile course. Doubtless she’ll blog the full story when she’s ready. What a star.
