Ready For The Road
by Russell Turner - 18:15 on 10 April 2018
Kawasaki San coughed and spluttered into life this afternoon for the first time in around seven months. He deserves better. He didn’t leave his garage, but will tomorrow when he goes for his MOT. Expect blizzards or torrential rain.
He sounded well, considering it’s his 25th birthday in a few weeks, so I’m hopeful he’ll pass the test without any extra expense; the subsequent service will probably mop up any spare cash I have. I’ve already shelled out £85 for his road tax, which seems a tad expensive alongside the £30 it cost to tax Grandson of Seat for another year. It’s just as well that after two gigs this weekend, City Limits has two more in the weekend after the London Marathon.
I made the first of my taper runs today: a modest 31 minutes which averaged 11:15min/mile over 2.8 miles, which is a good steady pace. If I can average that over the whole marathon I’ll pass the finish line at just under five hours. That’s my A target.
Matchgirl advises me that most runners set off with three targets in mind: A is the best they can hope for if everything goes right; B is what they’re really aiming for; C is what would be acceptable if things go wrong on the day. My B is to finish inside 5:30; my C is to finish before I’m overtaken by the dustcarts.
I’ll definitely have to finish because yesterday, thanks to a generous donation (you can always rely on your mum), I hit my £500 fundraising target. If you’re one of the anonymous donors, thanks to you too. Why so shy?
All being well there’s still more to come; reaching £1,000 is now my A target.
