Dressed To Kilt

by Russell Turner - 22:17 on 28 August 2018

Don’t tell the bride, who’s probably panicked for months about getting everything just so, but most weddings are the same. Certainly the receptions are, and having seen six this month with City Limits, plus one more to go, we know what we’re talking about: a nervous first dance, a quiet first set because everyone’s busy yakking, a buffet of variable quality, then a lively second set after the gossip’s all done and the booze has kicked in.

However, now and again one stands out. Sunday’s do would have been memorable anyway, seeing as it was Jenna’s farewell gig, but the reception was organised by a German TV celebrity wedding planner for her son and wife-to-be. The wedding was at Eilean Donan Castle, after two days of pre-celebration; the reception was at nearby Dornie Village Hall, dressed to the nines in flowers, two long tables filled with candles and named place settings; more celebration was planned for subsequent days. The whole lot was followed by a TV crew, although it had wrapped up by the time we came on stage, which was a blow for hopes of stardom in Germany.

But that wasn’t the most memorable part: the sight of several Germans in pleated tartan skirts, under the impression that they were wearing kilts, will not be easy to forget, especially as they insisted that we play – twice – Donald Where’s Yer Troosers?

Next Friday’s reception, where Eileen will be unveiled as our new singer, is at a farm in the wilds of Moray, assuming we find it. Maybe that will be another mould-breaker.
