A Barbarous Act

by admin - 18:03 on 14 March 2010

Very occasionally real-world nastiness intrudes into this blog. Today is one of those days.

It follows the posting of a photo, taken just outside Dingwall by a Flickr friend, which illustrates that some Highland farmers still live in the nineteenth century. It's not pretty, especially for anyone who cares about wildlife, but here it is.

The police have begun investigations and the bodies have been removed. With luck a prosecution will follow – pine martens are a protected species.

I'm sure that farmers who believe they're in the right would say they're keeping the fields safe for lambs. They probably poison red kites and eagles for the same reason. The fact that most farmers don't resort to such measures speaks for itself.

The mentality of those that do is a mystery.

I felt so sad when I saw this photo, to think that people could still do things like this. I hope the person/people involved are found and dealt with appropriately.
It looks like an old gamekeepers mark like hanging up crows and magpies.
