The Trouble With Youngsters
by admin - 20:58 on 15 March 2010
The Rural Retreat's Great Staring Competition continued today but, as always seems to be the case, ended in a no-score draw.
Bess still doesn't know what to make of her nosy neighbour. She's not fearful of him, merely cautious, curious and perhaps a little confused. Our pampered puss has been an only cat for a long time. Roving Romeo – who's barely more than a kitten, even if he is bigger than her – just wants to play.
Life can't be perfect in the Montague household (Shakespearian scholars will get that), for Romeo continues to spend great amounts of time within the Retreat's boundary, even when there's rain. The lack of a cat-flap in his new home may also have something to do with it.
Or perhaps the youngster has never used one. Bess is taking no chances – rather than escape his attentions by using hers, this morning she preferred to stare him out on the doorstep until the door opened, at which point she ambled inside, dignity intact. Our cat was giving nothing away.
Rain has fallen on and off all day, and is forecast to get worse. This is because Kawasaki San was this morning delivered to his second home, RM Motors in Muir of Ord, where he will be prepared for another motorcycling season.
So the window of photographic opportunity was small and the results mediocre, but that's no reason not to share our woodpecker's latest long-distance portrait. He's a star.
Legal Update: Someone is helping police with their inquiries into the death of the fox and the pine marten, I've been informed. Let's hope this leads to a court appearance.
