Edith and Norman

by admin - 17:33 on 21 March 2010

A run on the newly serviced Kawasaki was top of the agenda today, but uncertainty about his electrical health meant we played safe and stayed home.

This allowed Matchgirl and me to observe the intricate fandango danced by Bess and Romeo as the resident moggy and her importunate neighbour continue to reach an understanding about the rules of the garden.

At the moment they look like Edith Evans being bothered by Norman Wisdom, although the cloth-capped twit never mewed piteously at next door's cat-flap. Whether he's asking us to let him in or Bess to come out and play is uncertain.

He's Behind You

Bess's usual response is to skulk behind the door, like a tenant behind with the rent when the landlord calls, and wait until he goes away – which can take some time. If he sneaks up while she's out and about she shows who's boss by ignoring him.

In the afternoon she eluded Romeo for long enough to join Matchgirl and me for a stroll up the lane to the steading, although a boisterous Dalmatian meant we never reached our destination.

"It's all right, he likes cats," the unconcerned owner yelled as the noisy, over-eager dog bounded towards us, no thought given to whether the suddenly distant moggy liked dogs. Matchgirl spoke to the owner quite sternly.

A Moment Of Uncertainty
