Don't Mess With Bess

by admin - 22:13 on 24 March 2010

Cats can be jealous, as Romeo the interloper found out the hard way today.

Matchgirl returned from another tough day's shopping this morning to gaze upon a scene of rural contentment: Bess and Romeo – a carefully judged distance apart – curled up and enjoying the spring sun in the garden.

Bess greeted her by rolling over to get her tummy tickled. Romeo, who clearly liked the idea, trotted over to ask for some of the same. The Alpha Female was having none of it. She threw a swipe then chased him away from Matchgirl with a fake charge.

Only one cat has petting rights in and around The Rural Retreat. You don't mess with Bess, as this snap from last year shows.

More one-upcatship took place in the early evening when Bess returned to the garden to sharpen her claws on the willow tree and practise her climbing skills. Romeo, who can have little fun at home, appeared within minutes to shadow his heroine and new best friend.

But The Alpha Female is still committed to keeping the interloper in his place. She ignored his playful overtures and stared at him from a high branch until he lost interest and went in search of stimulation elsewhere.

Poor Romeo. Life's hard for the new cat on the block.
