Spring Pursuits

Romeo the interloper today won his first round in the battle for supremacy with The Rural Retreat's resident moggy.
Bess, who'd been enjoying the sun in one of her favourite spots outside the cottage, watched with bewilderment as the youngster performed the world's most unsubtle feline stalk and crept up on her in full view. The pounce still came as a surprise.
I'm certain he was playing, but the sun-worshipper allowed herself to be chased to the safety of Matchgirl's legs and concede a victory to the incomer. She was subdued for the rest of the day.
Matchgirl's been subdued too, since Falkland oil exploration share prices plummeted this morning. I'm still optimistic – there's lots more drilling planned during the next few months. We'll be oil barons yet.
To cheer her up we pursued the traditional country pastime of viewing the spring lambs. No-one can be unhappy while watching small woolly flocks charging around a field, flinging themselves about and generally having a good time.
But the fun will stop tomorrow, if the weather forecasters are correct. Snow is set to return. At least Bess will have an excuse to stay indoors, away from big bad Romeo. It's an ill wind...
