Light and Shade
by admin - 19:45 on 06 May 2012
It's amazing how much difference the light makes. Last Saturday I was lucky enough to snap our latest marten in a golden glow at 8.47pm; yesterday she jumped on to the gate only twenty minutes later but the overcast conditions meant that the resultant snappery was dull and flat.
I saved one snap because her punk hair-do's a great illustration of what I presume is either a juvenile or a winter coat being shed. If any marten experts are reading, please enlighten me.
It was late enough that most birds were tucked up in bed so there was no-one around to harass the diner as she gobbled Nutella and peanut butter. She even ignored a squeak from the window (barely five feet away) when I pulled down the sash in a bid to let the Pentax shoot through air rather than glass.
A second squeak was too much disturbance. She left, but at a disgruntled trot rather than a panic-stricken gallop. The Bushnell confirmed a return after dark, so it's unlikely she's been scared away – not while there's free food still to be had. The window received a good cleaning today.
Her portrait failed to find a buyer in Dingwall, yesterday, although several cards featuring Mrs Marten proved popular. The only print to sell was of Greengate in Kirkcudbright, which I have high hopes will be repeated many times this year.
One couple who spent some time poring over my wares were already happy owners of The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery – so happy that they asked me to autograph my business card to keep inside it. They then left without buying anything. Sralan and his apprentices would not have been impressed
