The Nutella Trunk passed the most important test last night – the Bushnell snaps viewed this morning featured at least two individuals on its stunted branches. Now all I have to do is find the best vantage point, because the tree's new shape, and the fact that it went back into the ground at least ten degrees anti-clockwise, mean all my camera angles must be rethought.
Even better, its one surviving leafy branch remains in good health, as do the green shoots – unlike most of the cuttings I took. Two still look full of vigour, however, so Nutella Saplings may one day be found a place in the garden or donated to a less aboreally blessed estate.
The woodpeckers have also inspected The Trunk, as did Young Marten at around 8.30 this evening, before treats had been served. Indignant birds alerted me to the visit, just in time to see a brown shape lope through the new flowerbed and disappear behind the willow tree.
Nutella and peanut butter was put out shortly afterwards and within minutes the diner had returned to make short work of the goodies on the gate. Maybe I should have stayed out, with the jar in my hand, and let her run up my leg to get it.
The bib confirms that this is the same marten I've snapped in the past few weeks, her moult now complete. She didn't move on to The Trunk, which was a shame, but doubtless there'll be opportunities soon.
