Life Beneath The Lawn

Bird feeders, we're advised, should be moved around the garden to avoid the build-up of spillage and keep things tidy. However, as I don't strive for a manicured garden I've never worried too much about it.
Which is why The Seed Volcano beneath the apple tree is beginning to reach an epic size.
This is of great interest to the local rodent population. Small vole hills, or mouse mountains, erupt in the vicinity most nights, doubtless created by small creatures emerging to collect free food.
What's happening under the grass can only be guessed at. Bess has been seen staring intently at the ground, listening hard, so lots of tunnelling activity may be taking place under her paws. If this blog ceases unexpectedly it means I've disappeared into an unexpected crater.
The martens don't care. Daylight sightings are sparse but visits after dark are frequent, as this montage confirms.
The Nutella Trunk appears to be surviving – its shoots continue to grow – but Mr Gardener has warned me not to jump to conclusions: the tree might not realise it's dead until the sap ceases to circulate. I'm still hopeful.
