Of Moggies and Martens
by admin - 19:55 on 05 June 2012
Yesterday the cottage and garden were haunted by a moping moggy. Today Bess was examined yet again by Dr Vet, who announced that one of the few teeth she has left will have to come out, and while she's at it she might as well take out the remaining three or four because they serve little practical use.
Tomorrow, when her surgery is complete, our poorly puss will be able to give a fine imitation of Les Dawson.
The birds will be delighted – especially the siskins – but I'm certain that a toothless predator will prove just as efficient (in her own haphazard way) as she was before. Dismembering her victims may be more of a challenge.
Word must have reached the marten world, too, for at 10.30 last night we had our first live viewing for quite some time. The light was failing but there was no mistaking the visitor – Mrs Marten, and looking in robust good health.
Squirrel James will be proud of me, for I had the camera set on RAW. This meant that I was able to make the best of images captured in low light with high ISO and low shutter speed by adjusting colour balance and reducing some of the noise. I could do better (I've lots to learn about RAW processing) but as record shots they're fine.
She left without climbing The Nutella Stump. This was a pity, but any snaps would have been poor. So enjoy these; if you can't get enough of Mrs Marten you'll find more on Flickr.
