The Travails Of A Poorly Puss
by admin - 20:27 on 11 June 2012
Poor Bess is not a happy cat. A couple of days after she went under the knife she'd recovered her appetite and all seemed well. Then she lost interest in food and moped. A further recovery was followed by a further relapse.
This morning we were ready to fill the cat-carrier again and make another trip to Dingwall, but the pesky puss was much brighter and eager for food. Come the afternoon, gloom had returned, so the journey will take place after all, as early as possible tomorrow.
Our guess, largely based on some powerful halitosis, is that Bess is suffering from an infection brought on by her latest dental extraction. It can't be coincidence that the work was done by Dr Death himself, rather than Bess's favourite, Dr Vet.
All of which makes this an unfortunate time for me to start (and finish) work on a small project I've had in mind since last year – a bijou kids' book featuring snaps of my most regular model; something which Matchgirl immediately interpreted as a requiem for her beloved pet.
I'm more optimistic. When the book's a million-seller I'm certain that its heroine will still be around to demand her share of the royalties, probably in roast chicken. Before then, all I need is a decent quote from Tigger or, failing him, another reasonably local printer which will enable me to sell the forty-page opus at a pocket money price. Fingers crossed.
The sharp-eyed may have noticed an apparent error in the title. Bess, I will now reveal, is our moggy's nom de plume – a change brought about by Matchgirl's craving for anonymity in the early days of this blog. She's less paranoid now, but don't expect her real name to be announced to a curious world any time soon.
As for Tess, in these pages she will remain Bess.
Any monetary gain from my new project is hypothetical, so it's pleasing to report snappery-related financial success in other areas.
After a weekend in which two framed prints found new homes, today I received a modest but welcome cheque from Tore Art Gallery for the sale of four mounted prints. Its clientele favours landscapes, it seems.
And Eilean Dubh Restaurant in Fortrose has agreed to become the second outlet to offer for sale a fine selection of cards based on my work.
Let's hope this is a sign of things to come. Mr Ford's MOT is due for renewal soon and I've got a bad feeling.
