A Famous Feline

by admin - 15:35 on 13 August 2012

The sun beat down on the Highlands over the weekend, which may explain why few customers attended the markets I favoured. At least this meant stallholders had the opportunity to watch a Spitfire and a Mustang thrill the crowds across the firth at Fort George's annual Celebration of the Centuries.

But trade wasn't totally bad, for nine copies of Tess's book were snapped up (and one Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery).

Several people had seen her story in the Ross-shire Journal – a tale that's spread further afield thanks to enterprising RJ reporter Lynne who tipped off a chum in a news syndication service. The result was a slightly sensationalised version in the Daily Record. I've not seen it in print, but the website story can be found here. Feel free to Facebook and Tweet it to your friends.

Scotland on Sunday was also interested, I'm told, although I've not yet been contacted by any Edinburgh hacks.

My website address and other details did feature in the original RJ story but were scissored to make the tale fit the available space, Lynne told me. Pesky subs.

The publicity continues to work, for this morning Tess received her first ISBN order (for one copy). And Ullapool Bookshop ordered three after an eager customer asked them if they had the great book she'd heard about. I'm not in danger of breaking three-figure sales just yet but I'm well over halfway there. I expect the real demand to begin when Tess and I get our write-up in Cat World.

Things would be much better if I could share our success with the moggy herself, even though she'd hate the fuss. Yesterday, a moist-eyed Matchgirl packed up her baskets, mats and toys; her plates and dishes have already been put away at the back of a cupboard. Soon, all that will be left in the open is her red blanket, which I'm too soft to want to lose.

One day, another feline will find its way into The Rural Retreat, begin bossing about the occupants and be given brand new beds and toys in return for allowing itself to be pampered, spoiled and indulged and given the run of a garden that most cats would dream about.

But not yet. Not yet.
