Noises In The Night

by admin - 17:02 on 18 August 2012

The first noise was a crash, followed by what sounded like scuffling in the bushes. I stepped outside to see what scampered away, but the scuffling continued. As it was dark (all this occurring yesterday evening) I moved closer... and realised that the sound was the creaking of tortured branches.

The garden's latest arboreal casualty is the willow tree, which fortunately isn't as badly injured as The Nutella Tree was – rather than the whole thing toppling over, just one rather large limb had snapped and fallen against the branches of a neighbour.

There was no wind, so the cause is most likely that the branch had grown too far and too heavy. The rot exposed by today's daylight may have played a part too.

So Mr Gardener and his chainsaw will be around sometime in the future, leaving us with a small amount of firewood to supplement the coal we'll need to get us through the hard winter forecast by Cairngorm's snowberries.

It was purely coincidental that this afternoon I began some long-overdue weeding amongst the plants he provided earlier this year, once again exposing foraging voles to the common gaze. I'll attempt some action snaps next week when work on the latest Chatterbox is complete.

Matchgirl believes it's no coincidence that our latest arboreal drama should involve Tess's favourite climbing tree. This was a message from her, she says, although I've no idea what she was trying to communicate.

Maybe just letting us know that she's still around.
